Keeping Our Eyes on the Lord
My eyes are always on the Lord, for he will pull my feet out of the net.
~Psalm 25:15 CSB
Eyes on Me
I took my grandkids to the playground at the park. Everywhere I looked, kids were climbing, sliding, and jumping. Picking out a nearby bench, I rested and watched their antics. Big smiles lit their faces until my six-year-old tripped and fell. Immediately, she cried and looked for me. From my bench, I could see the anguish in her eyes. Of course, I rushed to her aid and brushed her off. No blood. No bruises. Only marginal limping for about thirty seconds, and then she was off again.
Shaking my head, I returned to the bench and thought about her response. She faced a problem, and right away she looked for me. Her brother, other kids, and adults surrounded her, but she knew where her help came from. Hmm. I wondered where I looked whenever I faced hard situations.
Our God, will you not judge them? For we are powerless before this vast number that comes to fight against us. We do not know what to do, but we look to you.
~2 Chronicles 20:12 CSB
Keeping our eyes on the Lord is challenging. Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, faced a huge dilemma. The armies of the Moabites, Ammonites, and some of the Meunites came to fight against Judah. Like my granddaughter, his eyes immediately turned to another source for help: God.
Eyes on God
Similarly, when problems assault me, my first step should be to acknowledge my inability to face the multitude alone. Whether the situation is physical, financial, family-related, work-related, or something as simple as finding my keys, I need God’s help. He waits for me to surrender my self-reliance and call out to Him. He wants me to know He is there. Although I hesitate sometimes, my heart needs to turn to Him.
Once I acknowledge my insufficiency, I must admit I do not know what to do. I can’t fix everything. Control is the lie I tell myself instead of running to God. His counsel is what I should seek constantly.
Turning our eyes to God immediately through prayer and reading His Word is the best response. Seeking His help and comfort brings peace through the difficult times. God should not be our last resort or the one we call upon after all our efforts fail.
Remember what the Lord said to King Jehoshaphat and Judah.
This is what the Lord says: “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast number, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.”
~2 Chronicles 20:15 CSB
Whatever you are facing today, turn your eyes to God.
Lord, thank You that Your desire is for me to come to You, and You’re always there. Teach me how to resist self-reliance and lean into God-reliance. Amen.
