Jesus, the Gift That Keeps Giving
But when her baby is born, she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
~ John 16:21 NIV
When my son was born, he was a true miracle. My husband and I named him Andrew because of Andrew, the disciple who brought his brother Peter to Jesus. I clearly remember the first Christmas after my son died. He was only sixteen. My son was gone, and my heart ripped in pain. The tree and decorations gave no cheer. How could Christmas ever be the same again? Fortunately, I turned to Jesus, the gift that keeps giving.
The Sorrow
Imagine the discomfort of labor in a cold stable with prickly hay, piles of dung, and animals chewing their cud. But that’s how Mary brought our Savior, the Messiah, into the world. At that moment, she didn’t realize that the heavens had parted, that a chorus of angels had sung to shepherds, or that wise men packed their donkey bags for a long journey. But she believed in her son, and God was pleased that others did, too. Jesus, the long-awaited One, broke the night’s silence. Heaven rejoiced as Jesus brought peace to people who faced life-and-death challenges.
This child prince entered the ministry thirty years later as a servant, healer, and teacher. He modeled to His disciples that true life is discovered in Him.
As He approached the cross, Jesus prepared His disciples for the coming grief they would experience. He knew losing their relationship would sorrow them. They would witness the painful humiliation and death He would suffer. They would see the seeming loss of hope that his enemies had overcome him. So, where would they discover hope?
The Hope
But Jesus knew their sorrow would turn to joy. He promised they would see Him again on earth and at His Second Coming. This news would complete their joy.
These things I have spoken to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.
~John 16:33 NIV
This Christmas, celebrate Jesus, the gift that keeps giving.
Lord, thank You for being here, even in death and loss, during a season heightened with unfulfilled longings. Through Your death and resurrection power, You give grace and peace to all who believe.
