I’ve Forgiven But Why Am I Still Upset?
“I’ve forgiven, but why am I still upset?” Why do I feel the same pain?
The Pain of Unforgiveness
These questions hit me every time someone hurts me. The emotions tear me down, giving me a heavy heart, even after I have forgiven. But God commands us to forgive because He has forgiven us.
Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor [perpetual animosity, resentment, strife, fault-finding] and slander be put away from you, along with every kind of malice [all spitefulness, verbal abuse, malevolence]. Be kind and helpful to one another, tender-hearted [compassionate, understanding], forgiving one another [readily and freely], just as God in Christ also forgave you.
~Ephesians 4:31-32 AMP
I’ve been a believer in Christ long enough to know I need to make forgiveness a regular practice. But have I really forgiven someone if I still experience negative feelings?
The Peace of Forgiveness
My research revealed that forgiveness is a choice, a conscious decision. The biblical concept of forgiving means to “let go” or cancel a moral debt. This does not depend on waiting until we feel peaceful. Forgiveness is an intentional choice to obey God rather than a passing emotion. God commands us to release bitterness and to pardon others as an act of obedience, even when feelings like anger or hurt persist.
This quote from Joyce Meyer’s Ending Your Day Right: Devotions for Every Evening of the Year gave me great insight. “You can make the right decision to forgive and not feel any differently. This is where faith is needed to carry you through. You have done your part, and now you are waiting on God. His part is to heal your emotions, to make you feel well and whole. Only God has the power to change your feelings toward the person who hurt you.”
Through God, we can have changed hearts and peaceful lives. That sounds much better than carrying around the exhausting burden of resentment.
Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.
~Colossians 3:13-15 NLT
Does forgiving someone seem more doable and lasting now? Forgive that person so you can carry peace in your heart.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your word and for giving me the Holy Spirit to help me live out what it says so I can be a peaceful person. I desire to live by Your precepts, even forgiveness, because I know they’re the best. In Jesus’s name I pray, amen.
