In Every Season
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.
~Ecclesiastes 3:1 ESV
Summer is in full bloom. The conversational trend tends toward complaining about the heat and comparing the weather in different locations. Some, however, will prefer a different season in every season.
Some love summer in full bloom, with watermelons and sunshine while others enjoy autumn with its crisp leaves that warmly scent the cool air. Still others love fresh snow and cozy fireplaces. And still others come alive with the lavish green and newly bursting birdsong and blooms in spring.
Isn’t that just like life? We always want what is most comfortable for us. But God didn’t make life like that. Life is full of different seasons and changes that make us uncomfortable. The temperatures of circumstances can hit and leave us melting inside or frozen.
What is beautiful about the different seasons is that they create opportunities to deepen our walk with Christ. We are outside our element, and the change fosters dependency on Him.
I love the comforts of certain things. I have favorite seasons and circumstances in which I would like to remain. Although God orchestrates variety in life, He promises He will never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5-6) or leave us comfortless (John 14:18).
He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.
~Daniel 2:21 ESV
Through every season, whether literal or figurative, Christ’s steady strength and constancy hold us fast and give us true delight.
Embracing God’s beautiful purposes in each breath helps us savor life more joyfully through every season. With that mindset, we do not linger in just one season, where we find the most comfort and identity, but miss the growth and delight of change.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song, I give thanks to him.
~Psalm 28:7 ESV
Let God use each season to cultivate your relationship with Him. Even if it’s not your favorite season, you can still find joy in the present and draw strength from His unwavering love.
God, thank you for every season in life, both the favorites and those I get through to get to the next. Please help me find refuge in Your constancy through all the changes. Help me see the beauty in each season and how You use each moment to draw me closer to You. Thank You for being with me in every moment. Amen.
