How Romance Looks
Heart-shaped boxes filled with chocolate treats, flowers, and candle-lit dinners are common signs of Valentine’s Day. The day we celebrate romance. But how romance looks and what it means can confuse us.
I could recount the history behind St. Valentine and his adventures, but we could easily Google that. I’m more interested in the significance of Valentine’s Day and why it is a lasting, well-celebrated holiday.
What does God say about romance? Is there romance in the Bible? Yes! The Bible contains many romantic references.
The Song of Solomon is a beautiful poetic book of the Bible that teems with romantic language. It is thick with cultural references, so a good study guide is handy.
I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine; he grazes among the lilies.
~Song of Solomon 6:3 ESV
Though it is not commonly seen as a romantic epistle, 1 Corinthians contains the most popular verses read at weddings.
Love is patient, love is kind, it is not jealous; love does not brag, it is not arrogant. It does not act disgracefully, it does not seek its own benefit; it is not provoked, does not keep an account of a wrong suffered, it does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; it keeps every confidence, it believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.
~1 Corinthians 13:4-8 NASB
Romance is rooted in love and kindness for someone we love. It also entails being good to them with intentional acts that illustrate the love and kindness God shows us.
Take on characteristics of God when you show romance to your significant other. After all, God is love. His lovingkindness is everlasting … on Valentine’s Day and every day.
Heavenly Father, please help me be more like You in doing good for those around me and loving others as You do. Lord, help me be romantic with my spouse, generous in kind words and deeds. Help me to focus on Your love for me and how I can love others. In Jesus’s name, amen.
