Hanging on God’s Every Word
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
~John 1:1 NIV
Once, instead of doing a structured Bible study, I read straight through the Bible from one cover to the other. This takes a long time, but I’ve discovered a love for studying this way. If God draws my attention to some specific Scripture or chapter, I study it deeper and find myself hanging on God’s every word.
God has brought so many things to mind as I meander through His Word, allowing Him to lead me. Countless devotional ideas have popped into my mind as I’ve taken my time and read this way. Often, Scripture takes on new meaning even though I have read it before.
God has shown me that He will carry me even when I’m old and gray (Isaiah 46:3-4). His beautiful Words seeped into my heart just when I needed them. Repeatedly, in the book of Judges, He brought Scripture to life, and it jumped off the page. The Bible is food for our souls and quenches our thirsty spirits. The Old Testament, in all its rich history, reminds me of what’s coming soon. I anticipate what’s in the New.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
~John 1:14 NIV
The road to the New Testament is slow, but the Old is fresh in my mind. God has spoken so clearly through some Scriptures, and I’ve been hanging on His every Word, wondering what little nugget of gold He will set before me to study.
When the pages start turning in the New Testament, my excitement builds because I’m almost to my favorite part, where the One who loves us comes on the scene. The part where the Word becomes flesh and makes things right. The part where He takes our place by hanging on the cross and paying the price for our sins. Then comes the glorious third day when He rises again.
Jesus is my favorite part, and one thing I know for sure is that I’ll be hanging on to God’s every Word.
Make a plan to study your Bible.
Heavenly Father, thank You for Jesus and for giving us the Bible. In Jesus’ name, amen.
