First Love and Pink Laundry
You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.
~Revelation 2:3-4 NIV
I love God. Hopefully, we all do. I also love my husband, my family, my dog, and my country. Loving so many things in life is wonderful, but we should be vigilant to separate our first love and pink laundry. I’ll explain.
In English, we have many words to express the nuances of so many things, but the varied meanings of love all get lumped into a single word. I wonder if, by oversimplifying the term, we may have unwisely cheapened the value of some while foolishly elevating the value of others.
Throwing a new red sock into a laundry load of whites leaves the red sock faded, while the whites take on a pinkish hue. Likewise, our love for many things can cause our bright red love for God to fade. The depth of color becomes averaged among the load. As our first love’s passion for God fades, more is leached out of our lives in the process. Our hope, peace, and joy swirl down the drain along with the bright pink wash water.
The above puts us on a slippery slope. Spiritual affairs of the heart, vying for our affection, can cast a haze over the memory of God’s tenderness and compassion. Additionally, we can forget the great lengths He went to, bearing the ultimate cost, to purchase us as His own.
It’s not too late to reignite the spark in our relationship with our creator. Why not begin again by doing those same things you did at first?
Rediscover your peace, joy, and contentment in a renewed relationship with God.
Father, show me how to fan the flames and stoke the cooling embers of my heart, so I will do what I did when I first met You. Teach me to set apart my love for You as deep, precious, and holy. Then, may that vigilance keep a separation between my first love and pink laundry. In Jesus’ name, amen.
