Finders Keepers
Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
~Matthew 7:7-8 NIV
The Dime
Many moons ago, I found a dime. I hung an Avon book on a neighbor’s doorknob, turned to leave, and there it lay on her porch. Finders Keepers. I bent down to pick it up, but as I reached for it, the Holy Spirit stopped me midway. That’s stealing.
Stealing? Really? It stunned me that God would consider picking up a dime from someone’s porch as theft. But I left the dime alone and made my way home with a new way of thinking about keeping what I find.
Interestingly, God calls us to seek and says we’ll find. In the finding, there is keeping. But He’s the One doing the keeping. Not us. We seek and He keeps.
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
~John 10:28-29 NIV
The Lesson
Sometimes in our Christian journey, we find things we want to keep. Maybe it’s useful, like the dime I found in my spiritual youth. God used it to correct my thinking because in my flesh, it seemed fine to keep a dime that wasn’t mine. But to God, it was sin.
When we’re growing up spiritually, we can easily keep things that are better left alone. We must tune in to God’s correction. He knows what’s best for us. Most often, our thinking is wrong. He’s changing our temporary flesh perspective to His eternal spiritual purpose.
God is our keeper. Thank goodness for His indwelling Holy Spirit. He’s perfect and patient while we’re learning to distinguish between our understanding and His way of thinking. And we can never be snatched away. He keeps us.
How has God changed your perspective on something as simple as finding a dime?
Heavenly Father, thank you for working within me through the power of the Holy Spirit. Thank You for giving me Your perspective and making me more like Your Son. In the powerful name of Jesus, Amen.
