Find Beauty in the Valley
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; for your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
~Psalm 23:4 ESV
I imagine King David writing Psalm 23, brainstorming spiritual metaphors from his shepherd experiences as he walked through the valley of the shadow of death. Some scholars say he had that valley in mind when he wrote the psalm. But how did he find beauty in the valley?
Another name for the valley is the Wadi Qelt–one of the most beautiful but treacherous places in the Judean desert. The entrance has a bumpy, narrow road leading to the lower part. A person must use firm steps to prevent a dangerous fall while descending. Palm trees line the roadsides. Wildflowers bloom. Wildlife roams freely. Wonderous springs sit in the lowest spots. These refreshing bodies of water are among the lowest places on earth. Rock cliffs tower above them. The worn stone caverns throughout the journey offer a stillness that is hard to find elsewhere. The valley is C-shaped. No one can see the end while walking through, but it’s there.
When God’s hand plucks us off a sunny mountaintop and places us at a valley entrance, life thrusts us into a new reality. Fear tells us we’ll never get to the other side. Uncertainty shrouds our pathway with shadows. When darkness falls, our vision is limited so drastically that we don’t know the way forward. So, we wait like a stone with no capacity until God comes to our rescue. And He does.
When we turn our gaze from the darkness to God, He infuses us with strength and offers us His hand. Then, He sheds just enough light on the path for us to take the next step forward. His presence keeps us calm, reminding us that He knows the safe way through. He leads us on, pointing out the blooming wildflowers along the way and bringing us to deep, wonderous springs for refreshment. Then, He offers us a stillness in the silent caverns that’s difficult to find anywhere else—a stillness that shields us from the threat of dangerous wildlife.
When we tire of walking and still can’t see the end, God offers us His hand again. But this time, instead of holding our hand, He holds us in His hand. He can do what we cannot do for ourselves during this time. We find true rest. Nothing can easily move us. We find peace with the understanding He has given. And we allow that to occupy our minds instead of the fear, uncertainty, and discouragement that initially plagued us.
God will impact your soul significantly while you walk through the valley if you allow Him to work in the way He wants. You will enjoy treasures. While you wait, absorb the joy of His presence. When you reach the end, you might realize that it was one of the most beautiful places God has ever taken you. Not because it wasn’t treacherous or heart-wrenching, but because you encountered Him in ways you never have.
Don’t be afraid when you reach a valley in life. Find beauty in the valley.
Father, I trust You to hold my hand as I pass through life’s valleys. In Jesus’ name, amen.
