Evelyn Mason Wells: Here I Am!
Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I. Send me!”
~Isaiah 6:8 NASB
I can still see the little fourth-grade girl sitting in the auditorium, where she eagerly hung onto every word the missionary lady spoke.
As I envisioned everything being described to those of us in the audience, a dream was born within me. No, not just a dream. It felt like a mandate, a calling. My mind raced, “I want to be a missionary and tell others about Jesus!”
Miss Mackie added cut-out lions to the giraffes on her flannel board as she talked about Africa and the animals which inhabited that part of the world. She added pictures she had taken of the people who lived there which were not unlike those in the National Geographic magazines I loved to read, which Mr. Mays, our mail carrier, left in our mailbox every month.
Next, Miss Mackie added pictures of Jesus and His disciples and told us that just as the Lord had sent His followers to tell the good news of Jesus, He had sent her and many others to the people in Africa and other places around the world about Him.
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”
~Mark 16:15 NASB
Wow! Jesus had sent Miss Mackie to Africa as a missionary! To tell the people there about Him! She said there were people around the world who had never even heard the name of Jesus. I wondered how this could be. Why, I had heard about Jesus all my life. And I couldn’t wait to get started!
Discuss a time when you knew beyond any doubt that God had spoken to you about a path you were to take.
Heavenly Father, You direct our steps, and we are so grateful for the plans You have for us. Please continue to direct my steps to walk the paths You have laid out for me. Help me be obedient to everything You have called me to be.
In the holy name of Jesus. Amen.
