Don’t Forget to Look
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
~Psalm 19:1 ESV
Sometimes, I must remind myself: “Don’t forget to look.”
My View
One morning, I had to run a quick errand before heading to work. The errand took me in the opposite direction of my usual morning route. As I set out, the beauty before me left me speechless. The oranges and yellows of the sunrise danced with the blues and purples of the clouds, creating a canvas worthy of the finest gallery. A gasp and then gratitude tumbled from my mouth: “Lord, thank You for this spectacular display of Your glory! I am in awe of You.”
As I lingered over the incredible sight, I sensed the gentle whisper of the Spirit: “This view is here for you daily, my girl. You just forget to look.”
God’s View
The Spirit’s gentle rebuke stayed with me. What else was I missing when my gaze was fixed on my phone rather than His face? What blessings am I skipping because I’m so focused on my troubles? I wondered what beauty I failed to see because I focused on the ugly on the newsfeed.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes.
~Psalm 19:7-8 ESV
I want to be a noticer, to see the sunrises and the downcast faces that need my smile and prayers. To view the changing leaves and the way God stays the same. I want to see the opportunities to lend a hand and the sweet hands reaching out to help me up.
Think of some things that you should notice.
Lord, tap on my heart’s shoulder and point out the things I’ve been missing. I don’t want to miss a thing. I want to see Your beauty in nature and the faces of people made in Your image. Open my eyes to see what I need to see today. Help me not get so busy and distracted that I forget to look. In Jesus’ name, amen.
