He who believes in Me, the works that I do will he do also;and greater works than these he will do.John 14:12b
I was folding my husband’s jeans, checking the hems for frays. That’s how I determine at a glance which are his work jeans verses his dress jeans.
The thought came to me that I am like a pair of jeans that are frayed on the ends—less than perfect, but usable to the majestic God I serve. Perhaps you can relate.
God is majestic in every way, perfect, and glorious. In contrast, I am very imperfect. However, rather than feeling small, I know how usable I am because it is God’s empowerment that enables me to do mighty works.
Jesus said, “He who believes in Me, the works that I do will he do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father” (John 14:12b NKJV). Jesus said, “For the Father loves the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and He will show Him greater works than these, that you may marvel” (John 5:20 NKJV).
By partnering with Jesus, we tap into God’s power. God not only partners with us, He ordains works for us to accomplish, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV).
Just think of the significance—even though we are like a frayed pair of jeans, Jesus who lives inside of us, being the express image of the glory of God the Father, creates us with a divine purpose. Truly, we are like a frayed pair of jeans, flawed but we are work-ready, because of Jesus Christ’s empowerment.
Frays may come, as on the hems of our jeans, but we are more useful to God because we recognize we need His empowerment to live productive lives. Let’s take the limits off what we can imagine accomplishing as we work to bring His Kingdom forward. Glory!
What is a work you want to accomplish with God’s empowerment?
Father God, like the frayed jeans, thank You for my weaknesses. I know all good things I can accomplish will happen only as I lean into Your grace-filled bosom. Especially when I have reached a goal, keep me humble, and dependent upon You. Help me to me proclaim Your goodness throughout the world. In Your Son Jesus Christ’s Name, I pray. Amen.
