Clean at Last
The one who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but whoever confesses them and forsakes them will find mercy.
~Proverbs 28:13 NET
I am notorious for losing jewelry. Bracelets have slipped off my wrists, necklaces have mysteriously vanished, and years ago my wedding ring disappeared. Thankfully, I’ve since replaced it. Recently, however, I lost my ring again. I searched for weeks and finally gave up. While doing laundry, I found the ring wedged between the wall and the dryer.
While inspecting the ring for damage, I noticed it was dirty. I placed the ring in a pot of water and brought it to a boil. I repeated the procedure several times and watched it release years of trapped residue from its crevices. When I finished, I peered into the band and noticed the heart-shaped setting, visible only from the inside. My efforts produced a ring that sparkled, with no harm to show for the prolonged cleansing.
Similarly, when we come clean of our misdeeds, we radiate, and communion with God flows. The apostle Paul reminds us that we’re children of God and calls us to live without fault. In this way, we shine as lights in the world (Philippians 2:15). King Solomon cautions us against concealing sins. Doing so can lead to dire consequences. He likely remembered his father’s tendency to do this when he wrote this counsel.
I, too, have foolishly harbored sin, and it has marred God’s image in me and thwarted His sanctifying process. My unwillingness to forgive has hardened me. But I’m learning that when I yield my heart, God cleanses it of its impurities.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
~1 John 1:9 NKJV
When we don’t address sin, it infiltrates our lives and obscures the beauty God desires to produce in our character. The process of making us pure isn’t instantaneous. Instead, it happens over a lifetime. The apostle Paul reminds us that God has begun a good work in us and will complete it (Philippians 1:6). God will cleanse us and make us what we are not yet: unblemished and holy.
When we struggle with sin, a compassionate God pursues us and won’t let go.
Turn to Christ and confess your transgressions. When you do, you’ll find mercy and be clean at last.
Heavenly Father, Your lovingkindness brings us to repentance. As we confess, refine us so that we bring You much glory. In Jesus’s name, amen.
