Charles E. Maldon, Jr.: Great Morning
The faithful love of the Lord never ends. His mercies never cease. Great is His faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
~Lamentations 3:22-23 NLT
“New mercy. Every morning.”
As the sun gently touched my arm, I heard the Lord’s whisper. I could feel His love. I felt as if God Himself embraced me and said, “I am with you.”
I have read the above passage numerous times, have taught from it, and heard expository preaching about it, but that morning I experienced God’s intentional love. Like looking out a window after a night of total darkness and seeing daybreak. My experience reminded me that God has not forgotten about us. Even if we experience darkness, He will bring us into the light once again.
Although we do not know when daybreak will appear, we know the sun will crest the horizon. This was the assurance I felt that morning. It was as if God had painted a brand-new day on a blank canvas. I thanked God, and His goodness overwhelmed me.
As I got off my knees and sat on my couch, I thought, What makes this day a great morning? I had decent health, a place to lie my head, and a career. I woke every morning with little stress. But were those the only reasons I was thankful? God reminded me of His faithful love for me personally and how His love never stops. I thanked God for his blessings and His faithful love. When we let God down, He does not stop loving us.
Can you imagine always living in darkness? Doing so would be like living in a home with no windows and no sunlight to feel. When God allowed Christ to die on Calvary’s cross, He opened our prison. Jesus’s sacrifice gave us hope that we can live a more abundant life.
God’s faithful love is as comforting as coming in from the brutal cold to the warmth of our homes. God’s love warms our hearts, stirs our spirit, and generates joy.
For God so loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
~John 3:16 NLT
The beginning of God’s love is grace, which allows us to experience His mercy. God is rich in compassion for the world. Our connection with God is the only way we can be the best person for our families.
But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.
~Ephesians 2:4 NLT
God’s mercy makes every morning good. Vines Expository Dictionary describes mercy (eleos) as “the outward manifestation of pity…Mercy assumes need on the part of him who receives it and resources adequate to meet the need on the part of him who shows it.”
The warmth of God’s mercy invigorates us to do better and to remain free from living our lives in darkness.
I am humbled by God’s mercies. You may not feel God’s mercies because of circumstances or inner turmoil. However, if you can catch a glimpse of the light, pressing through the darkness, like the dawning of a new day, this knowledge will warm your soul to know there is hope.
Reflect on God’s involvement in your life. Share your thoughts.
Lord God, thank You for Your unconditional love that gives me hope every morning. Forgive me for moments when I’ve let You down and for the times I’ve murmured and complained instead of being grateful. I commit to starting my days by seeking You and Your ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.
