Awakening Praise
AWAKENING
Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
~Psalm 47:6 NKJV
Awakening praise took time. Anxious thoughts and an unsteady heart sent me to my quiet place on the porch.
Sitting in the old, paint-peeled rocking chair, I opened my Bible and slowly began to rock. I pleaded with God to give me the words to pray because I felt empty.
I quietly read Psalm 47. God whispered in my heart to sing praise. What, God? My thoughts raced to understand. Was He promising this was the job that would rescue us from financial hardship and relieve our tension and anxiety? After all, I had to have a reason to praise, right?
THE DILEMMA
My husband had walked into yet another job interview––this time several states away. I lost count of how many he had gone through in the past year. Having the door shut so often left me questioning God’s presence. I begged God to fill me with peace and assure me this would be a turning point.
MY INHERITANCE
The Holy Spirit guided me back to verse four: “He will choose our inheritance for us, The excellence of Jacob whom He loves. Selah.” This referred to God’s promise to give the land of Canaan to Israel, His beloved children. So where does that leave me? I wondered.
After some moments of pondering, I realized this same promise applied to me. As His child––through salvation––I find my inheritance in Him. To have an inheritance chosen by God––the God of the universe, the same God who created heaven and earth–assures me to trust in His endless supply. I am His child, and what is His is mine.
As I thought of God’s sustaining power over the previous months–by His grace, we had lacked for nothing–my prayer became praise. I couldn’t hold back the tears as praise brought peace–peace in knowing God was in control, whatever the outcome.
PRAISE, PRAY, REST
God’s promises are rich and pure. He keeps them all. We can rest in His ability to supply our needs as we surrender to His will, way, and timing. He cares for His children.
A few months later, my husband received a job––one for which he had not applied. I praised God for the opportunity, but I’m most thankful for the lessons learned in the months of hardship. In the struggle, I found God’s provision through praise.
Remember your inheritance is in the Lord. May you find peace as you praise Him for His promises.
“My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
-Philippians 4:19 ESV
What are some of God’s promises you can praise Him for?
Father God, as I cry for You to meet my needs, help me to remember what You have already done. Remind me that my inheritance is found in You and assure me of Your endless supply. I praise You for provision. In Jesus’ name, amen.
