A Shift of Focus
Because he has focused his love on me, I will deliver him. I will protect him because he knows my name. When he calls out to me, I will answer him. I will be with him in his distress. I will deliver him, and I will honor him.
~Psalm 91:14-15 ISV
When circumstances shout, vying for our attention, we need a shift of focus toward God and away from our struggles. Otherwise, real trouble begins.
When anything other than God holds our attention, the anchor of our soul shifts from the solid rock of Christ Jesus to the shifting sand of our circumstances. Our decisions suffer, and our attitudes and faith unravel and spin out of control.
Most of us are dealing with some sort of struggle at any moment. But the secret to surviving and flourishing in this season lies in another focus shift.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me, And let us exalt His name together. I sought the Lord, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears.
~Psalms 34:3-4 NKJV
Far-away objects appear small, but as we approach them, they appear larger. Our perspective changes. As we draw close to God, we magnify Him and see Him more clearly. This clarity brings comfort as we see His power to save us. We regain peace when, once again, our anchor firmly grips the solid Rock.
We don’t need to allow the wind and waves to whip us around. By drawing close to God, we can shift our focus. We can anchor in Christ Jesus so we won’t be blown away by the winds or carried by a riptide out to sea.
Challenges and stresses will surely arise, but when we fix our eyes on Jesus and anchor our hearts in Him, we can weather any storm. Christ has delivered us before and can do it again.
I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.
~Psalms 18:3 NIV
Determine to long for the rest of God’s presence and the peace and security of being anchored to the Rock.
Father, I draw close and shift my focus from my troubles to You. Although a storm may rage around me, I can know calm seas inside because my anchor holds in the Rock of Christ Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
