I think deep down inside, everyone wants a love story of some kind.

Our Longing

We long for someone who will choose us above all others and stand by us through our ugliest moments, darkest times, and greatest challenges. Our hope is to enjoy life with someone we can share inside jokes and stand beside in great moments. Deeply human needs long for someone to fully depend on. We long to lean hard into that sure embrace, knowing there will always be unwavering comfort, peace, and devotion. We want to be with that one who truly understands us and whom we can love fully in return.

Hope for and belief in a love story like this fuels the economy on holidays, especially Valentine’s Day. Movies, songs, books, and poetry are all inspired and driven by the hope of such a love found and shared. I’ve seen people go to extraordinary lengths because of love. I’ve been that person as well.

Does it always go as longed for? Sometimes, it is better than we ever dream. At other times, the tragedies of life leave love stories ending in broken hearts. Occasionally, love stories never come to fruition, even after years of trying and searching. What I find most amazing is that regardless of the outcome, each scenario continually leaves a person’s heart exposed and aching for the source of love to sustain them through life.

God’s Answer

What more perfect example of a love story than God’s love for us? His unfailing and unchanging love draws our hearts in. God pursues relentlessly, pays for everything, and passionately plans the best possible outcome for us with cards and detail. He promises He will always be there and that His love will never leave.

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

How often do we turn to the greatest example of a love story and deeply think about how rich and beautiful it is to be given God’s love? The marvel and awe can wear off if we don’t keep it refreshed.

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.

Take a moment and reflect on the incredible journey of God’s love weaved into your storyline. Then, spend some time thoughtfully reveling in Him.

God, I don’t always consider how much You lavish Your love on me. You do so much more than I ever acknowledge or even realize. I don’t want to overlook Your love or ever take it for granted. No matter what love looks like in this life, I know Your love is flawless and unfailing. Help me love You well today and keep that love fire burning brightly for You. You are my greatest love story. Amen.
